Designing the City as a Resource

This exciting new student urban design competition begins on the 1st of August 2014 with entries due on the 31st of January 2015. The Schindler Group, in collaboration with the Chair of Architecture and Urban Design, Prof. Kees Christiaanse at ETH Zurich invite Bachelor’s students in their final year and Master’s students, and their international equivalents, in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and planning, to participate in this single stage competition. Students may work either in teams or individually, under the supervision of a faculty member.

With 150,000 USD in prizes, the GSA enables students from around the world to share their ideas for creating open and inclusive urban environments, using the key competition theme of mobility. The competition concept – Designing the City as a Resource – will aid in the creation of specific proposals for a site in Shenzhen, part of the Pearl River Delta in China. The detailed brief, rules and other competition materials are available at the time of registration on the GSA website, at

The international jury of renowned experts from a diverse range of fields includes Mr. Yan Meng, of Urbanus, Prof. Phillip Rode of LSE Cities, Prof. Kongjian Yu of Turenscape, Prof. Farshid Moussavi of Harvard University, Mr. Jackie Han, president of Schindler Elevator, China and more. To compliment the independent research of competition participants, the GSA website will feature interviews with selected jury members and articles related to the theme of the competition, so that students can propose holistic design-based solutions to make a high quality of life accessible to all.

The GSA will conclude with an award ceremony in Hong Kong, in April 2015. Teams that are nominated for prizes, along with their faculty supervisors, will be invited to attend.
